How to put ChatGPT chats in folders
ChatGPT lists your chats by date. After a few weeks of daily use the list is long, and the chat you need is somewhere below the fold. There are two ways to group chats by topic.
Option 1. ChatGPT Projects
Projects are built into ChatGPT. A project groups chats with shared files and instructions, which is useful when every chat in it needs the same background.
- In the ChatGPT sidebar, create a new project and give it a name.
- Open the menu next to a chat and move it into the project.
- New chats started inside the project use its files and instructions.
Projects work well for a few big pieces of work. They are flat, so you cannot put a project inside another one, and each chat can only be in one place.
Option 2. Nested folders with Foldwell
If you want a filing system rather than a workspace, folders are lighter. Foldwell adds them in a side panel next to ChatGPT.
- Add Foldwell to Chrome and open chatgpt.com.
- Click the Foldwell icon, then Open side panel.
- Click New folder and name it, for example Clients.
- Drag chats from the ChatGPT sidebar into the folder, or open a chat and click Save to folder.
- Use the menu on a folder to add a subfolder, rename it, move it or give it a color.
Folders can be nested eight levels deep and you can make up to 10,000 of them for free. They are saved in your browser only.
A simple layout that holds up. One folder per area of your life or work, such as Clients, Writing, Code and Home, with subfolders for each client or project. Leave quick one off questions unfiled.
Which one to use
- Use a Project when chats need the same files or instructions.
- Use folders when you want to find chats again, across many topics, without changing how ChatGPT answers.
- You can use both. A chat inside a Project can also be filed in a Foldwell folder.
