How to save a ChatGPT chat as Markdown

Markdown keeps headings, lists and code blocks readable as plain text, and it opens in Obsidian, Notion, VS Code and most note apps.

The built in way

ChatGPT can email you an export of all your data from Settings, under Data controls. You get a zip file with every chat as HTML and JSON. It is complete, but it is everything at once and it takes some digging to find one chat.

One chat or a selection with Foldwell Pro

Open the chat in ChatGPT.
Click the Foldwell icon and choose Export this chat. A Markdown file downloads.

For several chats at once, open the side panel, tick the chats, click Export and pick Markdown or JSON. Foldwell opens each chat in your tab, reads it, and saves them all in one file. Keep the tab open until it finishes.

What the file looks like

Each chat starts with its title and link. Every message follows under a heading that says who wrote it, in the order they were sent.

Exports work the same way for Claude and Gemini chats.
